Reading Room

In 2000, former First Lady Hope
Taft approached the Director about establishing a
reading room for the children who visited their
incarcerated parent at the Pickaway Correctional
Institution. This idea spread across the state,
and now the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation
and Correction maintains children’s reading
rooms in each of the 32 institutions. The
reading rooms encourage family literacy by
providing a pleasant and comfortable setting for
both child and incarcerated parent. Each room is
stocked with a wide variety of children’s books
and has an inmate narrator who reads to the
visiting children twice a day. The role of the
inmate narrator is to read picture books to the
children in much the same manner that children’s
hour would be done at a public library. A
variety of arts and craft supplies for the
children are also available in most of the
rooms. Many of the supplies and books are
donated by employees and service organizations.
This past year the Department served over 45,000
children. The inmate narrators worked over
32,000 hours in reading to and with the
children.

Reading Room

In 2000, former First Lady Hope
Taft approached the Director about establishing a
reading room for the children who visited their
incarcerated parent at the Pickaway Correctional
Institution. This idea spread across the state,
and now the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation
and Correction maintains children’s reading
rooms in each of the 32 institutions. The
reading rooms encourage family literacy by
providing a pleasant and comfortable setting for
both child and incarcerated parent. Each room is
stocked with a wide variety of children’s books
and has an inmate narrator who reads to the
visiting children twice a day. The role of the
inmate narrator is to read picture books to the
children in much the same manner that children’s
hour would be done at a public library. A
variety of arts and craft supplies for the
children are also available in most of the
rooms. Many of the supplies and books are
donated by employees and service organizations.
This past year the Department served over 45,000
children. The inmate narrators worked over
32,000 hours in reading to and with the
children.
The Southern Ohio Correctional Facility seeks to provide offenders of felony convictions

Responsible Family Life Skills strives to motivate inmates to recognize their

Reading Room

In 2000, former First Lady Hope
Taft approached the Director about establishing a
reading room for the children who visited their
incarcerated parent at the Pickaway Correctional
Institution. This idea spread across the state,
and now the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation
and Correction maintains children’s reading
rooms in each of the 32 institutions. The
reading rooms encourage family literacy by
providing a pleasant and comfortable setting for
both child and incarcerated parent. Each room is
stocked with a wide variety of children’s books
and has an inmate narrator who reads to the
visiting children twice a day. The role of the
inmate narrator is to read picture books to the
children in much the same manner that children’s
hour would be done at a public library. A
variety of arts and craft supplies for the
children are also available in most of the
rooms. Many of the supplies and books are
donated by employees and service organizations.
This past year the Department served over 45,000
children. The inmate narrators worked over
32,000 hours in reading to and with the
children.

In 2000, former First Lady Hope
Taft approached the Director about establishing a
reading room for the children who visited their
incarcerated parent at the Pickaway Correctional
Institution. This idea spread across the state,
and now the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation
and Correction maintains children’s reading
rooms in each of the 32 institutions. The
reading rooms encourage family literacy by
providing a pleasant and comfortable setting for
both child and incarcerated parent. Each room is
stocked with a wide variety of children’s books
and has an inmate narrator who reads to the
visiting children twice a day. The role of the
inmate narrator is to read picture books to the
children in much the same manner that children’s
hour would be done at a public library. A
variety of arts and craft supplies for the
children are also available in most of the
rooms. Many of the supplies and books are
donated by employees and service organizations.
This past year the Department served over 45,000
children. The inmate narrators worked over
32,000 hours in reading to and with the
children.
The Richland Correctional Institution seeks to provide offenders of felony convictions

re-entry, community service and victim reparation, we seek to instill in offenders an

Adult Basic Education (ABLE) is funded with Adult Basic Education funds through
the Ohio Central School System. ABLE Roofing is a ten to twelve week program that targets
offenders with reading scores below 6.1. The program offers training on the use of roofing
tools, identification of roofing materials, figuring the amount of materials needed, and
roofing installation. This program offers readiness skills to offenders to become
successfully employed roofing helpers upon release.

The New Life program is a modified 120 bed therapeutic community for offenders
with identified alcohol and other drug (AOD) problems. New Life helps offenders develop
the skills they need to maintain an AOD and crime-free lifestyle. Offenders participate in
a 24-hour learning experience in which individual improvement in behavior, attitude, and
emotions are monitored and mutually reinforced by staff and fellow program participants
during the daily regimen. Within the limits imposed by a prison setting, the offenders,
under staff supervision, run the operation of the community. This is accomplished by
assigning various "crews" that are arranged in a hierarchy according to seniority,
individual progress, and productivity. This social organization is fundamental to the
rehabilitative approach of mutual self-help, work as education and therapy, peers as

In 2000, former First Lady Hope
Taft approached the Director about establishing a
reading room for the children who visited their
incarcerated parent at the Pickaway Correctional
Institution. This idea spread across the state,
and now the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation
and Correction maintains children’s reading
rooms in each of the 32 institutions. The
reading rooms encourage family literacy by
providing a pleasant and comfortable setting for
both child and incarcerated parent. Each room is
stocked with a wide variety of children’s books
and has an inmate narrator who reads to the
visiting children twice a day. The role of the
inmate narrator is to read picture books to the
children in much the same manner that children’s
hour would be done at a public library. A
variety of arts and craft supplies for the
children are also available in most of the
rooms. Many of the supplies and books are
donated by employees and service organizations.
This past year the Department served over 45,000
children. The inmate narrators worked over
32,000 hours in reading to and with the
children.
The Pickaway Correctional Institution seeks to provide offenders of felony convictions
within the State of Ohio a safe, efficient, humane and appropriately secure correctional
institution, while maintaining dedication to the protection of citizens of the State of
Ohio and the local community. The institution seeks to provide its employees with
opportunities for professional growth and development through education, mentorship and
training. Mindful of Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction's initiatives of
re-entry, community service and victim reparation, we seek to instill in offenders an

The Therapeutic Community (TC)/ Intensive Prison Program (IPP) are long-term
(6-12 months) residential Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) treatment programs. The TC approach
views AOD abuse as a reflection of chronic deficits in social, vocational, familial,
economic, and personality development. The aim of the Therapeutic Community is to promote
prosocial behavior, attitudes, and values as a method to attain abstinence from alcohol
and other drugs and eliminate antisocial behaviors. The TC’s at PCI and at the Ohio
Reformatory for Women are collaborative efforts between the Ohio DRC and the Ohio
Department of Alcohol and Drug Addiction Services.

Cam to Believe: This is
a 12-week program that is available to
inmates meeting the qualification for
entry into each service component.
Inmates are initially oriented into the
program, then must complete classes on
rational self-counseling, lifestyle
changes, criminal lifestyles, and
relapse prevention. The program
addresses issues in their lives that

Reading Room

In 2000, former First Lady Hope
Taft approached the Director about establishing a
reading room for the children who visited their
incarcerated parent at the Pickaway Correctional
Institution. This idea spread across the state,
and now the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation
and Correction maintains children’s reading
rooms in each of the 32 institutions. The
reading rooms encourage family literacy by
providing a pleasant and comfortable setting for
both child and incarcerated parent. Each room is
stocked with a wide variety of children’s books
and has an inmate narrator who reads to the
visiting children twice a day. The role of the
inmate narrator is to read picture books to the
children in much the same manner that children’s
hour would be done at a public library. A
variety of arts and craft supplies for the
children are also available in most of the
rooms. Many of the supplies and books are
donated by employees and service organizations.
This past year the Department served over 45,000
children. The inmate narrators worked over
32,000 hours in reading to and with the
children.

Reading Room

In 2000, former First Lady Hope
Taft approached the Director about establishing a
reading room for the children who visited their
incarcerated parent at the Pickaway Correctional
Institution. This idea spread across the state,
and now the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation
and Correction maintains children’s reading
rooms in each of the 32 institutions. The
reading rooms encourage family literacy by
providing a pleasant and comfortable setting for
both child and incarcerated parent. Each room is
stocked with a wide variety of children’s books
and has an inmate narrator who reads to the
visiting children twice a day. The role of the
inmate narrator is to read picture books to the
children in much the same manner that children’s
hour would be done at a public library. A
variety of arts and craft supplies for the
children are also available in most of the
rooms. Many of the supplies and books are
donated by employees and service organizations.
This past year the Department served over 45,000
children. The inmate narrators worked over
32,000 hours in reading to and with the
children.

The Therapeutic Community (TC) are long-term (6-12 months) residential Alcohol and
Other Drug (AOD) treatment programs. The TC approach views AOD abuse as a reflection of chronic
deficits in social, vocational, familial, economic, and personality development. The aim of the
Therapeutic Community is to promote pro-social behavior, attitudes, and values as a method to
attain abstinence from alcohol and other drugs and eliminate antisocial behaviors. The TC’s at
ORW and Pickaway are collaborative efforts between the Ohio DR&C and the Ohio Department of

During the month of December and for

must bond with their mother in the first few months of life or their emotional and intellectual
functioning is impaired. In June 2001, ORW opened Ohio's only nursery program within an
institution. The Achieving Baby Care Success (ABC'S) Program allows incarcerated pregnant
inmates to maintain custody of their infants after they are born. Each participant has an
individualized treatment plan so that the problems that resulted in her incarceration are
thoroughly addressed. Hands-on parenting instruction is available for every mother in the
program. Eligible mothers for the program are screened and must be serving a short-term
sentence for a non-violent crime. The criteria for the program ensures that the mothers and
infants leave the institution together. There are currently
14 babies in the nursery.

Reading Room

In 2000, former First Lady Hope
Taft approached the Director about establishing a
reading room for the children who visited their
incarcerated parent at the Pickaway Correctional
Institution. This idea spread across the state,
and now the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation
and Correction maintains children’s reading
rooms in each of the 32 institutions. The
reading rooms encourage family literacy by
providing a pleasant and comfortable setting for
both child and incarcerated parent. Each room is
stocked with a wide variety of children’s books
and has an inmate narrator who reads to the
visiting children twice a day. The role of the
inmate narrator is to read picture books to the
children in much the same manner that children’s
hour would be done at a public library. A
variety of arts and craft supplies for the
children are also available in most of the
rooms. Many of the supplies and books are
donated by employees and service organizations.
This past year the Department served over 45,000
children. The inmate narrators worked over
32,000 hours in reading to and with the
children.

Release Preparation Programming: Programming delivered to better prepare
an inmate for his/her return to the community and future employment. Such programming
includes the following areas: employment readiness, community resources, recovery
services and faith-based resources workshops, assistance in obtaining documents needed
by offenders returning to society, and job linkage assistance.

Transitional Education Program (TEP): The Ohio Central School System, in an effort
to provide transitional services to portions of the offender population, has initiated this
program. This program provides instruction on employment readiness issued through computer
instruction. TEP is a comprehensive collaboration that enables adult offenders, who will be
released from the facility, to successfully return to their communities and families. The TEP
model focuses on the use of technology to educate offenders in pro-social skills and transition
into the community. DRC, in collaboration with Community Connection for Ohio Offenders, Inc.,
incorporates the use of videos, individualized CD-based instruction, and web-based research
designed to provide transitional and life skills curricula coupled with post-release case
management services and evaluation.

Anger Management: Anger Control is an eight session group that explores consequences
of anger and aggressive behavior. The program looks at the functions of anger, beliefs, causes
of anger and aggression, the importance of thought in anger control, common thinking errors,
the physiological response and high risk situations. The inmate is educated on positive
conflict resolution and coping techniques.
