SAN RAFAEL, Calif. -- A Superior Court judge has ordered the State Board of Parole Hearings to eliminate a massive backlog of prison inmates awaiting their overdue parole hearings.
Marin County Superior Court Judge Verna Adams has ordered the state to complete a plan by Feb. 1, 2008 that would clear up case backlogs by June 1, 2009.
The ruling Thursday comes in a three-year-old case filed on behalf of California prison inmates who were eligible for parole but were denied hearings by the state after a number of procedural hurdles had created delays of up to two years.
The judge also ordered the state to provide accurate statistics on the number of delayed hearings.
