    Sierra Conservation Center "Jamestown"

Hi- I'm hoping to open a forum for this prison.  There is no place available for us to be able to communicate on the issues of this prison.  Please join me here if you have a loved one in this prison.

Sierra Concervation Center (SCC)- Jamestown, CA

    Sierra Conservation Center- Mission Statement

The primary mission of the Sierra Conservation Center is to provide housing, programs and services for minimum and medium custody inmates. SCC is one of only two prisons in the state responsible for the training and placement of male inmates in the Conservation Camp Program. SCC administers 19 male camps located from Central California to the Mexican border.

    Institution Details

SCC functions as the center for training staff and inmates in firefighting techniques. The prison is separated into two dormitory-type facilities for minimum and low-medium custody inmates and a separate high-medium custody facility.
Each of the 19 Conservation Camps is a self contained "prison without walls." The camps are sited in rural or wilderness areas for fire suppression. Inmates assigned to camps are dispatched to fight wild land fires and other emergencies when needed and a variety of community work projects.

    Institution Statistics

Sierra Conservation Center was opened in 1965, and covers 420 acres. As of Fiscal Year 2005/2006 the following statistics apply:

    Inmate Programs
    • PIA: Textiles (sewing)
    • Vocational: Mill and Cabinet, Auto Mechanics, Auto Body and Fender, Director's Plaque Program, Carpentry, Graphic Arts, Office Services
    • Academic: Adult Basic Education I, II, III, GED, Bridging Program, Re-entry program, PFT
    • Other: Substance Abuse Program, Reimbursable Community Crews, Religious, Self-Help Groups, PIA.

Various Driving Directions are listed below which gives a good idea of the location:

The first directions from Los Angeles are actually the best, but you can consult a map and decide for yourself or use Mapquest. There may be better ones as well.

The second directions give relative mileage and travel time.  I'm sure there are other routes that work, and if others will post the best way, this would be helpful.

    General Directions:

    From Sacramento:

    • Take Highway 99 south to Stockton
    • Take Highway 4 East to Copperopolis
    • Turn right on O'Byrnes Ferry Road
    • Continue for 12 miles; the prison will be on your left

    From Bay Area:

    • Take I-580 east to its merge with I-5
    • Take the exit marked for Manteca and Sonora.  This will bypass the town of Manteca and take you to Highway 99 north
    • Go one mile and take a right on Highway 120 East
    • Go through Escalon to Oakdale where Highway 120 merges with Highway 108
    • Continue on 108/120 toward Sonora, approximately 25 miles
    • Turn left on O'Byrnes Ferry Road
    • Continue for approximately 3 miles; the prison will be on your right

    From Southern California:

    • Take Highway 99 North from Bakersfield
    • At Merced, take Highway J-59 North toward Sonora
    • About 45 miles from Merced, take the Highway 120/108 intersect
    • Turn right and continue approx. 4 miles to O'Brynes Ferry Road; turn left
    • Continue for approximately 3 miles; the prison will be on your right

    From Redding:

    From San Francisco:

    From Los Angeles:

    From San Diego:

    Re: Sierra Conservation Center

It looks like the Sierra men will be helping with the fires along with all of the inmate fire fighters as per the news release earlier today.

God bless them all, look over them as well as all of the other fire fighters and families involved.

Gov. Schwarzenegger Directs CDCR to Utilize Inmate Fire Crews in Response to Major Wildfires

Governor Schwarzenegger today directed inmate firefighters and staff from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) to deploy across Southern California to work hand-in-hand with state and local firefighters. As of today, more than 2,300 CDCR inmates and more than 170 custody staff have joined firefighters from city and county fire departments and state agencies as part of a major coordinated effort to battle the widespread wildfires in Southern California.

“These crews provide critical support to the state’s firefighting response, going where bulldozers and heavy equipment cannot go,” said Governor Schwarzenegger. “Inmate firefighters and CDCR staff at our institutions are an integral piece of the state’s disaster response team. Fire camp crews are being activated and deployed as rapidly as possible. Firefighters are continuing to work around the clock to contain the Southern California fires and I want to extend my thanks for their bravery and dedication.”

In addition to inmate fire crews, strike teams made up of CDCR fire captains, staff and fire engines have been deployed from fire departments at the California Correctional Institution in Tehachapi, California Correctional Center in Susanville, Mule Creek State Prison in Ione and the Chuckawalla Valley State Prison in Blythe. Additional inmate firefighting crews and the staff who supervise them are currently being mobilized. Governor Schwarzenegger has led a coordinated state effort to make all resources through the state available to fight the fires in Southern California and has directed the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE), the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (OES) and the California National Guard (CNG) to activate additional personnel and make more fire and rescue resources available.

Earlier today, the Governor directed the CNG to make 1,500 guardsmen available to support the firefighting efforts. The Governor also requested four CNG helicopters through OES. The four aircraft are currently on stand-by at Mather Air Field (1 Firehawk) and Los Alamitos Joint Forces Training Base (3 UH-60 Blackhawks). The UH-60 Blackhawk and the Firehawk are capable of fire suppression missions as well as personnel transport in and out of dangerous and hard to reach locations.

For media information on the coordinated state effort to contain the Southern California wildfires please contact the State Joint Information Center at 916-845-8441 which is open 24 hours.

Governor Schwarzenegger last night proclaimed a State of Emergency in the counties of Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, Santa Barbara and Ventura due to more than eleven major wildfires to make more resources available to fight the fires. The CDCR fire crews are part of the Conservation Camp Program established in 1946. There are 42 adult and two Division of Juvenile Justice conservation camps in California. CDCR jointly manages 39 adult and juvenile camps with CAL FIRE and five adult camps with the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

More than 4,400 offenders participate in the program, which has approximately 200 fire crews. The crews respond to all types of emergencies, including wildfires, floods, search and rescue operations and earthquakes. They also work on conservation and community service projects on public land throughout the year when not fighting fires.

Only minimum-custody inmates participate in the Conservation Camp Program. They must be physically fit and have no history of violent crime including kidnapping, sex offenses, arson or escape. Juvenile offenders earn their way into camp placement and must be free of major rule infractions.

    Re: Sierra Conservation Center

Not a problem, that's what we are here for to try to help each other out when possible Wink

It is a pretty long drive for just one person, I haven't tried it myself when we've gone my parents come along I drive on our way there and my dad drives back, for some reason I always have a problem driving back I get very sleepy... we are going next week at least that's the plan, we were there about a month ago, if it were up to me we would go every other week but my husband says its not worth it cause we would get terminated so we just do the every 30 days all day visit..If you dont mind me asking what yard do you visit?

    Re: Sierra Conservation Center

Thank you. I have met some amazing people during all of this ordeal. You seem to be very nice and kind. My boyfriend is on Mariposa yard. He just got there almost a month ago. How long have you been going and what yard do you visit? By the way how long does your husband have? If you don't mind me asking. The drive is pretty long, but I would consider doing it again just to see him. This first visit was so worth it. I was so scared our visits were going to be terminated. I was so scared to even hold his hand. No thats pathetic but that is how I felt. Hope to here from you again soon.

    Re: Sierra Conservation Center

Things will get easier over time, and as both of you get you to how the visits work... I know from the stand point of being in there... It is hard for both sides. But it does get better...

Happy Holidays to all of you and know that you and your loved ones are in my prayers this season.....
