Does anyone know of any one who lives in the Santa Rosa Area that could share a ride with me to visit my husband at Corcoran 2. I have not seen him for almost 2 years. Blessings, Roxanne

Yes, I do.  My youngest son is out there.  He is still in reception.  Do you know how long they stay in there.  I heard it was a long time but it was supposed to be only about a couple of weeks but they usually keep them for months.

Re: North Kern State Prison (Delano 1)

Hello.  Reception is usually 90 days, but with the System o overcrowded it can take up to 5 months to be endorsed for mainline.  Once he sees his counselor though, he'll get shipped within a couple of weeks.

Re: North Kern State Prison (Delano 1)

    Hi,

It seems that lately, Reception have been running 8-10 weeks.... which is an improvement from a few years ago. I know the system always tells people it is only a couple weeks.

Reception is tough for those on the outside as there are no phone calls and mail is painfully slow.

Good luck to you, and if I can assist in any way, let me know

Re: North Kern State Prison (Delano 1)

Liferswife is also correct....one thing I did not mention is that the time in Reception is affected by the classification, or level, your son will be given.

In Reception, he has to wait to be evalutaed, then classified...then the waiting for space, a place to send him, begins. This is what will determine how long he will be in Reception...waiting for a place to go

Re: North Kern State Prison (Delano 1)

Postcards and greeting cards seem to get to the guys much quicker than letters.  You might want to send him a card asking him to send you a visiting questionaire (which he must sign before he sends to you) so that you can get the approval process started.  You fill this form out and return it to the visiting department.  Approval time varies from 30-60 days.

Just keep sending him mail.  You will get letters saying he's not getting letters - seems to always happen that way - but he will begin to get the mail and that will make the time in reception much easier.  Also, you can send him a packet of writing suppiles.  25 sheets of paper, 20 envelopes and 20 stamps can be sent per mailing.

Good luck - it WILL get easier once he is endorsed and hits a mainline, camp, or CCF.

Once again, Liferzwife is right! (Hi GAL!) Send postcards to get to him quickly. Mail at NKSP has been very delayed lately in both directions. Just continue to send letters and postcards to help keep his spirits up. This is one of the hardest times in prison life. At NKSP, it could last three or four months. Hang in there, this too shall pass!

North Kern State Prison - Mission Statement

The mission of North Kern State Prison is two-fold:  1) it functions as a reception center for the processing of incoming inmates from southern and some northern counties; and 2) functions as the Central California Transportation Hub for the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

    Institution Details

NKSP has a general population medium custody facility and a minimum support facility.  The general population portion of the institution focuses on providing educational opportunities geared towards providing inmates with an education which will aid them in seeking employment upon their release from prison.

The Reception Center currently processes incoming inmates usually within a 60 to 90 day period.  After compiling the inmate's criminal records, life histories, medical and psychological histories, and social relationships, NKSP staff determines the inmate's classification score and institutional placement.  NKSP also has a ten-bed Level I firehouse.

    Institution Statistics

North Kern State Prison was opened April 1993, and covers  640 acres.  As of Fiscal Year 2006/2007, the following statistics apply:

    Number of custody staff:

    1008

    Number of support services staff:

    Special Historical Notes

On October 7, 1994, the adult education facility was dedicated in the memory of Marie Keroack Romero, a prison teacher who was murdered at a California Youth Authority facility in 1975.

Three hundred and sixty acres of NKSP property has been designated as protected wildlife habitat for the Blunt-Nosed Leopard lizard, San Joaquin kit fox, and the Tipton kangaroo Rat.  The facility is an exact replica of its closest neighbor, Wasco State Prison-Reception Center.
