I'm new here, and I have a loved one that has just been sentenced to 16 years in prison. Is there any prison that is better for a woman to be in? Stupid question, as all prisons are bad, however, possibly one may be better than the other?

Can anyone tell me what reception is? After they leave jail, where does my aunt go?

I am very worried about her, she is in her late 40's. First offence, not street smart.

Any advice would be appreciated!

Civil Commitment Question and Help!!!!!

I dont even know where to begin. My fiance is a convicted sex offender who did his time at ADTC in new jersey. He was supposed to get out on 10/12. Instead he has been temporarity civilly committed. so now he is housed in the ANNEX around the corner.

The "residents" or so they are called over there are treated just as bad as the inmates. They have lock up, they have counts, they cant have cell phones, certain foods, can only get one visit a day, cant wear certain colors of clothing, have guards, locked doors, no electric, no hot water, questionable heating. no refrigerators. Visitors cannot enjoy a lunch with them. He feels like he is doing another bid for something he already served time for. The therapy he received and all that he accomplished at ADTC doesnt even count in the ANNEX. Its so sad. I feel helpless.

He has a public defender who told him that he should waive his right to the 20 day trial thing because he would lose. so he did what the public defender asked him to and now he is in limbo. he cannot go to therapy, he does not have a social worker or a therapist. he is just sitting there waiting, which is prolonging his treatment, which is prolonging his stay.

Does anyone know anything about this? Can anyone guide me as to where to turn, what to do, who could help get him home? Thank you in advance for any direction you could give me.

I have a nephew that is in Pack One Unit Navasota, TX . Is that in Huntsville? I am going to go see him next week. Trying to find how I go about getting to visit. Any advice would be helpful. I am new to the whole "prison world" too.

An excerpt from a letter from my PP on Polunsky (letter dated December 12th)

In keeping with TDCJ's usually unprecidented levels of ignorance and stupidity, they've once again out done themselves. Ever since this Tabler ordeal jumped off they've been down here on F-pod sealing up the cells, virtually using a welder and metal plate to entomb us alive.
Of course this has no bearing on how the cell phones got into the prison to begin with, they are still doing it. 'weld som' on it' is always the redneck bubba's answer. So they removed the dammned door handles and welded solid plate over it, welded extra pieces of metal over the mail slot the rat hole and the bottom skirt and are yet to add more and rubber seals and sweepers to those already on the door. Well, they've been over there on the other side of the pod welding angle iron in both corners of the back (outside) walls and when they do it sets off the smoke detectors which in turn activates the gas/smoke extraction exhausts, a series of huge fans in the side walls and roof of each section. These fans suck in massive quantities of air from the outside and blow it directly into the cells, out the cell into the pod common areas and out the fan exhaust thru sidewalls and roof to the outside.

Day before yesterday they ran these fans all day long. The temp outside is hovering at freezing to low 40's. The first day it was raining and my cell leaks, so there was a pond in the middle of the floor. That night for the first time in years, it snowed. So here they come again to continue their little welding spree and want to set off the extractor fans again. It was so cold frost was forming on the cell tables and stainless steel toilet and and condensing on the stainless wall the toilet is afixed too. Whee! So it was like an arctic freeze in hereall day long that day and now of course we're all sick. ALL that would've been required to alleviate this problem is one exhaust fan sitting in the cell door to suck out the smoke, dissipate it out into the huge common area. If it gets a bit much after a while turn on the gas purge and air it out. In 5 minutes the entire pod will be cleansed and the fans can be turned off and we'll all stay warm. See, when the purge fans come on it kills the heat coming out of the cell vents in favour of fresh air from the outside. It takes the system 5 minutes to freeze out totally. If they did it this way we would never lose heat... Now tho', instead, we're all sick. It's ridiculous. Oh well, it's the states medical bill. This freezing air routine is actual torture.

There is a S. court precident:- Prisoners are not to be subjected to extremes of temperature during inclement weather.

The thing about it is, they're subjecting us to punishment in the form of solitary confinement now, without any due process and no sentence to solitary. Even if we were sentenced to solitary we could only be kept there 15 days, this they're doing is in-definate!

I'm very new to the site. However, I'm glad to know that there is a place. I can get honest respones from people who understand. In saying that, I have a serious problem. That I really need some insight on. My husband and I are not legally married. Nonetheless, we did commit ourselves to one another and GOD. I've known him for 9 years now. I met him in 99" long before he went to prison and we were great friends as well as lovers. Thru out the years we stayed in contact off and on, then he went to prison. We were still in contact then one day we fell out and we stopped speaking. Some time went by and we got back intouch. By this time he had started to inform me of the romantic feelings he had toward me. I was unsure of where all of this was coming from but I knew I felt something for him as well. As time went on we had started to develop a beautiful relationship. I was overwhelmed at times because of how much he loved me. I didn't understand it then because it was the first time in my adult life. I was in love!!!! Though I had been in relationships before, this is the first time I had experienced true love. Fast forward to this year. We have had so many problems but the biggest one to plague our relationship is my infidelity and deceit. Never would I have imagined I could have caused this man I love, so much heartache and pain. We have been trying to repair the damage but it has been very difficult. Your probably wondering how he found out about the situation, I told him. I love this man severely!!! An I'm sure what I did is not a reflection of that love for him nor GOD, but I do! He says he doesn't want to be in a relationship anymore because his heart is crushed. I respect that but I still want to be with him. My question to anyone out there is this: Should I honor his request and let go or should I continue to pursue this relationship like my heart is telling me to? Simply because I don't know how to let go if that were the outcome. I know it's a lot but I would really appreciate some feedback please. No matter how brutal :)........

The idea for PrisonPlace.com began when I was sent to prison for a Probation Violation. As I was shuffled thru the process of going from court to county jail, to Reception,and finally to Corcoran State Prison, I had so many questions and concerns, as did my friends. Since I had no way of obtaining the information, I relied on what my friends and family could discover. To all our dismay, we found very little information and what we did find was often old or incorrect.Through this desire for information, we began to speak with officials at the institutions to gather ACCURATE information. We quickly realized the information we gathered would help many others in the same position.

We have made it our mission to continue to provide as much information and support as we can gather. We hope to bring as many outreach organizations to our site as Forum Sponsors as we can get. In order for this to work, I need your help by participating as a community member and we invite you to contribute any information you feel may help others going thru the same thing.

PrisonPlace.com contains a complete profile of every Federal and State prison throughout the U.S. Each prison profile contains "need to know" information including location, directions; how, where and what, to send regarding mail, books, magazines, packages, dress-outs, and information regarding visitation rules and guidelines.

PRISON PLACE

(A) General policy statement.

It is the policy of PrisonPlace.com to maintain an information and support environment which is free from all forms of unlawful harassment, including sexual harassment. This commitment applies to all PrisonPlace operations, programs, and activities. All members and guests. Share responsibility for avoiding, discouraging, and reporting any form of unlawful harassment. This policy applies to unlawful conduct occurring on PrisonPlace.com.

PrisonPlace will vigorously enforce its prohibition against harassment based on sex, race, color, national origin, religion, disability or handicap, age, veteran status, sexual orientation, or any other unlawful basis This policy shall be applied and interpreted in accordance with existing legal standards. Complaints of unlawful harassment will be dealt with on a case by case basis taking into consideration the totality of the circumstances. Individuals who are found to have engaged in unlawful harassment will be subject to appropriate action.

(B) Other violations of the unlawful harassment policy.

PrisonPlace will also take immediate action in accordance with Website policies on individuals engaged in any of the following prohibited acts:

(1) Retaliating against a person who has made a report or filed a complaint alleging harassment, or who has participated as a witness in a harassment investigation.

(2) Filing a malicious or knowingly false report or complaint of harassment.

(1) Sexual harassment

(a) Pursuant to Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Title IX of the Educational Amendments of 1972, “sexual harassment” is defined as:

Unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature, when:

(i) Submission to such conduct is made either implicitly

or explicity a term or condition of an individual's

employment, or status in a class, educational

program, or activity;

(ii) Submission or rejections of such conduct by

an individual is used as the basis for employment or

educational decision afffecting such individual; or

(iii) Such conduct has the purpose or effect of interfering with the individual’s work or educational performance; of creating an intimidating, hostile, or offensive working, and/or learning environment; or of interfering with one’s ability to participate in or benefit from a class or an educational program or activity.

Sexual harassment may involve the behavior of a person of either gender against a person of the same or opposite gender.

(b) Prohibited acts that constitute sexual harassment may take a variety of forms. Examples of the kinds of conduct that may constitute sexual harassment include, but are not limited to:

(i) Unwelcome sexual propositions, invitations,

Solicitations by posts, emails or private message;

(ii) Physical assault;

(iv) Unwelcome verbal expressions of a sexual

nature, including graphic sexual commentaries

about a person's body, dress, appearance, or

sexual activitites; the unwelcome use of sexually

degrading language, jokes or innuendoes;

unwelcome suggestive or insulting sounds or

whistles; obscene telephone calls;

(v) Sexually suggestive objects, pictures, videotapes,

audio recordings or literature, placed in posts, emails

or private messages, which may embarass

or offend individuals;

(vi) A pattern of conduct, which can be subtle in nature, that has sexual overtones and is intended to create or has the effect of creating discomfort and/or humiliation to another; and

(vii) Remarks speculating about a person’s sexual

activities or sexual history, or remarks about one's

own sexual activities or sexual history placed in posts,

emails or private messages

Not all behavior with sexual connotations constitutes unlawful sexual harassment.

(2) Other discriminatory harassment.

Other prohibited discriminatory harassment includes intimidation, ridicule or insults that unreasonably interferes with an individual’s comfort on PrisonPlace.com; creates an intimidating, hostile or offensive environment; or otherwise adversely affects an individual’s opportunities.

This type of discriminatory harassment applies to such conduct, which is based on an individual’s race, color, national origin, religion, disability or handicap, age, gender, sexual orientation, veteran status, or any other legally-protected characteristic. It includes actions such as repeated verbal abuse; the circulation of written material that demeans or exhibits hostility or dislike toward an individual or any of the aforementioned groups of persons; or inappropriate jokes or slurs.

(D Flaming and Trolling

Flaming and trolling are two linked terms that refer to types of behavior on the Internet, and most notably derive from Usenet and BBS (bulletin board systems) systems. This type of behavior is still fairly common in IRC (Internet Relay Chat) and at sites such as Slashdot.org.

Flaming

The term 'flaming' is defined slightly differently depending on which site you're on, but generally it means the same thing wherever you go. h2g2 defines it thus:

Flaming means posting something that's angry and mean-spirited - the online equivalent of flying off the handle.
... whereas, according to the Jargon Dictionary, the term 'flaming' originates at MIT1 from the phrase 'flaming ***'. The definition of 'flame' on this site goes on to define flaming in the following four ways:

To post an email message intended to insult and provoke.

To speak incessantly and/or rabidly on some relatively uninteresting subject or with a patently ridiculous attitude.

Either of senses 1 or 2, directed with hostility at a particular person or people.

(n) An instance of flaming. When a discussion degenerates into useless controversy, one might tell the participants 'Now you're just flaming' or 'Stop all that flamage!' to try to get them to cool down (so to speak).

Trolling
It defined 'trolling' in three ways:

... a posting designed to attract predictable responses or 'flames'; or, the post itself. Derives from the phrase 'trolling for newbies' which in turn comes from mainstream 'trolling', a style of fishing in which one trails bait through a likely spot hoping for a bite. The well-constructed troll is a post that induces lots of newbies and flamers to make themselves look even more clueless than they already do, while subtly conveying to the more savvy and experienced that it is in fact a deliberate troll. If you don't fall for the joke, you get to be in on it.
... an individual who chronically trolls in sense 1; regularly posts specious arguments, flames or personal attacks to a newsgroup, discussion list, or in email for no other purpose than to annoy someone or disrupt a discussion. Trolls are recognizable by the fact that the have no real interest in learning about the topic at hand - they simply want to utter flame-bait. Like the ugly creatures they are named after, they exhibit no redeeming characteristics, and as such, they are recognized as a lower form of life on the net, as in, 'Oh, ignore him, he's just a troll.'

Trolling is generally recognized as being an occupation rather than an occurrence, i.e. while people can (and do) flame for the sake of flaming, flaming can often simply be a manifestation of someone's overreaction to something someone else said. It is for this reason that while flaming is, almost without exception, frowned upon, trolling is more looked upon with scorn than its erstwhile counterpart. The website Slashdot.org, mentioned above, even goes so far as to have a method of forum moderation which allows postings to be classified as 'troll' (as well as such other labels as 'interesting', 'funny', and 'irrelevant'). Users who troll in situations like this generally troll for bait, as mentioned in the definition above.
