SCI Rockview (Centre County, five miles from Bellefonte) was begun in 1912 and opened in 1915. Originally planned to replace Eastern and Western Penitentiaries, it became instead the branch prison for Western Penitentiary, housing lesser security risk prisoners, most of whom were employed in Rockview's extensive farm program outside the gates. It now is a medium-security institution for men.

    Visiting Information

Hours: Visiting room is open daily, except Tuesday and Wednesday, from 8:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. The visiting room is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. In order to be assured of at least a one-hour visit, visitors should arrive no later than 2:30 p.m.

    Rules:

To be eligible to visit an inmate, an individual must be on the inmate's approved visiting list. In addition, the visitor will be asked for one form of picture identification.

No more than five people may visit an inmate at any given time. Some discretion is used here on the part of the Visiting Room personnel regarding younger children. However, to ensure that no disappointment occurs, it would be wise to limit your group to five, including children.

All inmates will be permitted one visit per week. A week is defined as running from Monday through Sunday. If a visit is not used one week, it may not be carried over to the next. Each visit will be for a minimum time period of one hour, providing that the visitor arrives no later than 2:30 p.m. However, if space permits, the visit may extend to a maximum of two hours on a weekend (Saturday, Sunday or holiday) and a maximum of four hours during weekdays (Monday, Thursday, Friday).

In addition, all inmates will be permitted one special visit per calendar month which can be used any day of the week, and which follows the same minimum and maximum rules noted above.

It should be noted that visits cannot be split up. For instance, a visitor cannot come on Monday for one-half hour and then return on Tuesday for another half-hour. Similarly, if an inmate or visitor terminates a visit for lunch, the visit may not be continued after lunch.

Visiting in the yard adjacent to the Visiting Room is permitted at the Visiting Room officer?s discretion (contingent upon personnel available and weather conditions) on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays observed by Rockview.

Hot and cold drinks, candy and snacks are available in the Visiting Room for purchase, and you may purchase these for an inmate and eat lunch with him rather than terminate the visit. No other exchanges are permitted and can be considered attempts to introduce contraband into the institution.

    General visiting information

All visitors must be on the approved visiting list. It is recommended that you arrive as early in the day as possible so that proper arrangements can be made in time for your visit. It may take time to notify an individual inmate for a visit, so please be patient.

Have proper identification with you. You will not be permitted to visit without proper identification.

Please be sure to sign in upon your arrival. If you travel by private vehicle, you will be asked to register the year, make, model and license number of your vehicle.

ALL visitors and vehicles are subject to search upon entering the institution, while at the institution and before leaving the institution. If you refuse to be searched before entering the institution, your visiting privileges may be denied. If you refuse to be searched while in the institution or upon leaving the institution, you may be detained until the appropriate law enforcement authorities arrive.

Cameras, tape recorders, radios, chewing gun, tobacco products and handbags are not permitted in the visiting area.

Visits are a minimum of one hour in length; however, this may be increased depending upon the number of visits scheduled for that day.

Inmates placed in disciplinary custody status will have their visiting privileges restricted to non-contact visits.

Please use good judgment and discretion in dress and behavior so as not to embarrass others in the visiting room. Keep children under control. Failure to do so may result in early termination of your visit.

Ex-offenders must have prior written approval from the Superintendent to visit any inmate.

Do not bring any kind of gift to the institution. Monetary gifts may be mailed in only and must be in either a money order or certified check. Inmates are not permitted to take anything from the visiting area.

Food may not be taken into the institution. Sandwiches, candy and soft drinks may be purchased and consumed where vending machines are provided. Smoking is prohibited throughout the Visiting Area.

Any visitor appearing to be under the influence of alcohol or a controlled substance will not be permitted to enter the institution.

All inmates are informed of changes that may occur in visiting regulations. It is the responsibility of each inmate to inform his visitor of these changes.

Please remember that any violation of visiting regulations may result in the suspension of visiting privileges.

The Department of Corrections encourages you to put money on inmate accounts electronically using one of the two following options:

    JPay

    Western Union

Please remember:  If your friend or family member owes fines, costs or restitution, a percentage of any money you deposit (regardless if it is electronically deposited) may go to paying his or her debt in accordance with DC-ADM-005

    How To Email an Inmate

    1. Go to the vendor website that services the institution where the inmate is housed.

    2. Establish an account with that vendor and follow their instructions to create an email.

    3. All emails are subject to review for appropriate content.  After review, the email will be printed on paper and delivered to the inmate.

    4. Any response from the inmate will be mailed out using regular U.S. Postal Service mail.  Inmates do NOT have access to any outgoing email programs.
