SCI Pittsburgh, formerly known as Western Penitentiary, opened in 1882 and operated until it was mothballed in January 2005.  It was reopened again -- as a facility housing minimum to lower-medium security male inmates needing alcohol and other drug treatment -- in June 2007.
The facility is located on 21 acres of land with approximately 12 acres located inside the walled perimeter. The facility is located on the banks of the Ohio River, approximately five miles from downtown Pittsburgh.

Visiting Information

Visiting days and times are Thursday through Monday, 8:00 am to 3:00 pm.  The Visiting Room will be closed Tuesday and Wednesday.

RULES:

Each general population inmate is permitted to have five (5) visits per month, from anyone on their approved visiting list.  The length of the visit will be no less than one (1) hour.  Longer periods may be permitted depending on space availability.

Inmates will be limited to a maximum of five (5) visitors.  Exceptions to this limit may be permitted, with prior approval by the Major of the Guard.

Inmates having non-contact visits are restricted to two (2) visitors as a result of limited seating and space.

All visitors must pass through and clear the metal detector and are selected randomly for scanning with the Ion Itemiser scanner.  Failure of the Ion Itemiser Scanner two (2) times may result in being denied visitation.

All visitors vehicles are to be parked on the Riverside accessed by Doerr Street.  All vehicles that are parked on facility grounds are subject to search.

All tobacco products, cameras, tape recorders, radios, chewing gum, cell phones, beepers, money, etc. are prohibited in the visiting areas.

All visitors that are eighteen (18) years old or older are required to have one (1) form of photo identification.

All minor children must be accompanied by a parent/legal guardian, County Children/Youth Services agency staff member or an adult(s) immediate family member(s) approved by the parent/legal guardian to accompany the child.  The individual(s) accompanying a minor(s) are responsible for the welfare and behavior of the minor.

No purses, bags, diaper bags, gifts, cash, etc. will be permitted into the facility.

Vending machines are provided for the purchase of soft drinks and food.  Token machines are available in the Visitor Lobby area and must be purchased prior to entering the Visiting Room.  Once in the Visiting Room, you may not leave to purchase the tokens.

Visitors will be permitted to take up to three (3) baby bottles, up to three (3) unopened jars of baby food (both of these items must be clear plastic) and up to three (3) diapers.

Please use good judgment and discretion in your attire.  Inappropriate dress will result in the visit being denied.  Hooded garments are not permitted to be worn by large children or adults.  The inmate and visitor may embrace only when meeting and departing.

Your children are your responsibility, and failure to keep them under control may result in early termination of your visit.

The inmate may only hold small children on his lap.  The Visiting Room Officer will closely monitor situations when small children are being held by an inmate and the amount of time the child is held, or the manner in which the child is being held or handled.

Visitors are not permitted to leave money for the inmate they are visiting.  Money will only be accepted in the form of a money order or certified check via the mail system.

Due to limited access and space, any visits that require special accommodations due to a handicap must be submitted by the inmate to the Major of the Guard at least one week in advance.  The handicapped visitor must park in a designated spot in the front parking lot.  The staff entrance will be used and the visitor will be processed through Central Control.
