my brother was sent to nksp today, and my family and i are not familiar of how anything inside a prison works , can anyone help me by telling me how the process work.I am so worried about him. :(
What exactly do you want to know? There are other groups like www.lovingaconvict.ning.com and www.prisontalk.com just so you know that have forums and blogs about most of the information. I'm in Alabama, and it varies from state to state, but I will give you some general information. Normally right after they are sentenced, they are sent to a temporary facility for "classification" (which is basically what security level of prison they should be sent to) and are there until they are sent to whichever prison they will serve their term in. You can write him, of course. And you can set up an account with whatever phone service the prison uses so that he can call (you will have to call the prison or ask your brother what phone service they use there). Remember when you set up the account that the prison he's transferred to may use another service. You can send him money by western union (you will need his DOC #) and other ways- again, it varies from prison to prison. Anything else?
thank you so much for answering me, how long would they keep him in the temp. facility? My brother has an injury to his hand that needs to be operated on, do they take care of that in the temp. facility? Are they ever kept in the temp. facility to serve their sentence? He also has no prior record does that come into play when they decide where to send him or do they base it on the crime committed? Thanks again
I feel for you. My brother has been in prison for 10-years. It is something I never, ever could get used to. He used to be at Kern Valley, he volunteered to move last summer. He spent 3-4 yrs there, I can't remember exactly. He was in C yard. His area was not as bad as other area's. I spent many nights worried sick about him. Our family too, has no experience with prison. We never imagined we would be exposed to it either. It's sad to see so many people suffer, but some people deserve prison, while others just makes mistakes and have to serve along with brutal people. It is a crazy system that leaves family members hurt.
KVSP is okay, I only have been to one other prison. It's a newer facility, so they are still going through the aches and pains of figuring out a system. It sucks for the inmates. But his yard is not as bad as some yards, so he should be ok. Good luck!
