Directions: From West (Lake City): SR-100 approximately 23 miles to SR-121 (Lake Butler), turn left, go approximately 6 miles, just outside town of Raiford turn right (east) onto SR-16. Go approximately 3 miles, cross New River Bridge. West Unit is on the right behind Florida State Prison. From North: From I-10 take Exit 335 (SR-121 South) approximately 19 miles to SR-16 East. Make a left turn and go approximately 2.5 miles; West Unit is on the right behind Florida State Prison. From South: Take US-301 to SR-16. Go west approximately 11 miles. The West Unit is located on the left, behind Florida State Prison.

Historical Information: New River C.I. was established in July 1987 as a result of the merger of two satellites units (New River Annex and Butler Transient Unit) of the Reception and Medical Center. The West Unit was formerly known as the Butler Transient Unit and was opened in August 1975 to house the overflow transient population from the Reception and Medical Center. In 1991 the mission was changed to accommodate long term inmates.
