Fort Lyon Correctional Facility is located 90 miles east of Pueblo, Colorado off Highway 50.
There
are 36 significant buildings, 43 employee residences and 23
miscellaneous support structures on the campus for a total of
approximately 579,718 GSF. The campus of FortLyon
is approximately 327 acres. The 23 support structures are small
buildings for water wells and other plant technology uses. Some of the
buildings are listed on the historic registry.
The mission of the Fort Lyon Correctional Facility is:
- Commit to protect staff, public and offenders through sound correctional policy and practice.
House geriatric, chronically ill, physically disabled and general population offenders.
Offer appropriate, consistent management and treatment of offenders.
Involve CDOC staff by mentoring toward professional growth.
Communicate and promote teamwork and cohesiveness among staff throughout the facility.
Encourage offenders to seek self-improvement through program and work opportunities.

Before Visiting
Before you can visit an offender housed in a DOC facility you must fill out a
Visiting Application.
Programs
Academic and Vocational Programming:
GED:This academic program prepares offenders to test for their General Equivalence Degree.
Custodial Training:Vocational
Janitorial Program provides offenders with an opportunity to learn
about the trade and provides a certificate upon completion.
Certified Nurses Assistant Training:Offenders enrolled in this vocational program are trained to perform duties as a CNA.
Treatment
Substance
abuse counseling and classes are offered by DCCCA. The mission of the
CDOC Alcohol and Drug Services Program is to provide substance abuse
treatment/education that produces long term change, increases quality
of life, reduces substance abuse and criminal conduct, and facilitates
successful reintegration into the communityThe Alcohol and Drug Services program has specialized contractual agreements with DCCCA.
Offender Services
FLCF
serves a unique offender population that requires an offering of a wide
variety of medical services. FLCF houses a comprehensive Correctional
Medical Outpatient Clinic and inpatient Special Medical Needs Unit. The
population consists of geriatric offenders, offenders with physical
disabilities, offenders classified as developmentally disabled and
abled-bodied offenders.
History
After the decision was made to close the veteran programs at FortLyon,
the Colorado Department of Corrections began exploring ways to obtain
ownership of the grounds and converting it into a prison with a
programmatic emphasis on health care services including nursing care,
geriatrics and services for offenders with serious mental illnesses.
The VA and CDOC coexisted at FortLyon for nearly a year. In March, 2002, FortLyon officially became the property of the CDOC.
