BVCF: A broad range of educational opportunities include English as a Second Language, Adult Basic Education, GED and Vocational Preparation. Vocational programs offered at BVCF are auto body, barbering, building technology, graphic arts, janitorial, printing, radio broadcasting and welding. In addition to the learning programs, offenders participate in recreation and have use of library services.
BVMC: Offenders at BVMC are encouraged to participate in the educational programs mentioned above. Vocational programs offered to offenders housed here include Janitorial, Heavy Equipment Operation and Heavy Equipment Maintenance. Vocational programs performing work for governmental agencies save taxpayers more than $500,000 each year, based on in-kind services.
CCAP: The CCAP provides a workable balance between a militaristic boot camp approach and traditional Colorado Department of Corrections, emphasizing safety, security and cost effective developmental opportunities for each offender. Although the program is known for its outstanding addiction recovery program, GED and cognitive thinking classes, the primary basis is military-style discipline.
Buena Vista Correctional Facility (BVCF), was built in 1891 as the Colorado State Reformatory (CSR) and opened in 1892. The facility was constructed using the labor of 37 inmates from the Colorado State Penitentiary (now Colorado Territorial Correctional Facility) in Canon City, CO. It originally housed approximately 125 inmates with 20 staff at that time. The Facility houses approximately 826 inmates today.
In 1984, temporary units (known as "the MODS") were brought onto the grounds to create a lower security facility. These remained until the current permanent housing units, programs and administration building were completed in 1999. The Buena Vista Minimum Center (BVMC) houses 288 minimum restricted offenders and has its own kitchen and visting room.
Coloado Corrections Alternative Program, (CCAP) or Boot Camp,is a 100-bed facility for non-violent offenders who have not previously served time with the Department of Corrections. Offenders who meet the program criteria may volunteer for CCAP during the intake process. CCAP was established in 1990. The 90-day program was originally housed in a tent city just outside the BVCF perimeter fence.
