There is a lot of discussion about inmates rights and working out. People are misguided to believe that inmates have luxuries or luxurious accommodations. If anyone considers sleeping on a 2" mattress laid across a steel frame in a building that in the summertime tempertures reach excess of 115 degrees and in the winter can get as cold as it is outside. Then by all means I want to meet you. In my opinion that is far from luxury. When it comes to working out and access to weights it gives inmates the advantage of dispersing aggression and anger in non-violent ways. While some inmates do use working out as a way to enlarge themselves, this does not apply towards everyone. The weights that the inmates are priviledged to are by no means new or well kept. Most are left outside all year round with no maintenance. Even on instances where inmates do not have access to weights or a recreation yard most will use either a broom handle with trashbags filled with water tied to it or roll the mattress up and tie a sheet around it as a form of weights. You could go so far as to confine an inmate in a 2' x 2' x 4' room and if the inmate wanted would turn himself upside down legs crossed and do pushups. So unless you plan to have inmates straped to beds until the muscles atrophy there's not much to be done about inmates working out.
Interesting post, Wicked,
My buddy spent 9 months in a Cali State Prison and did in fact, return stronger than when he left! I don't believe they have weights available to inmates in California. As he talked about doing bicep curls with bags filled with water, and also doing curls while lifting other inmates. Also, he talked about doing hundreds and hundreds of pushups each day....as well as situps, and other military type calithenics.
So, in short, I agree....if inmates want to workout to cueb aggression or anxiety, or if they are working out to intimidate others...there is nothing the system can do to stop it.
There are no weights where my Love is. He has to be very creative. Whatever he does, it works. He is Mr. Buffness! I think for him working out is a release. Helps keep the mind clear.
I happen to think they are a good thing as well. My fiane has had some serious back problems, degenerated discs and a pinch nerve and more recently a bone spur. Since he has started to work out it seems his back isnt hurting anymore. And yes, Im eager to enjoy the perks I recieve from it when he comes home; I happen to LOVE a cut chest & arms! LOL!!!
what i wouldnt do to see my husbands chest right now? Before he went in he had gained a little weaight from all the cooking i was doing, but now that he is there he has slimmed down and just looking at his arms, i want to melt, i can only imagine the parts of him i can not see right now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Lord help me at the walls.
