My buddy is really tripping out now that he is down to a month before release. He is starting to drive everyone nuts as his moods swing from happy to anxious.

Any suggestions from anyone on how to calm him down?

Just keep reminding him to focus on today...accomplish something today and don't think about tomorrow, or the day he leaves

Let  him know that it is not over until he walks out of those gates with his release papers. Best advice, it's not over until it's over. Take one day at a time. Having been in that situation, if he has visits every weekend then keep your hopes up and countdown the visitations instead of the days. Dwelling on days remaining can become extremely stressful. Basically tell him to stay within the shadows - be unseen and unknown to avoid any situations/confrontations that would cause him to have an extended incarceration period. Tell him to keep his head up - it's almost over.
